Episode summary

Personality:

At the start of the series, in the real world, Karen Kohiruimaki is a gloomy, lonely and shy university student. Though she's distant and rarely talk much, she's polite, formal, and a soft-spoken young woman when the need to socialize comes. And that's pretty much true for Karen's core personality. She's a loner. But, there is a reason why she is the way she is. And that has something to do with her height-- she's 183 centimetres tall, which is fairly tall for an average Japanese woman. She has a height complex.

Since she was little, Karen had always been taller than her peers. Her abnormal height made it particularly difficult for her to fit in and makes friends. Combining said difficulties and the frequent teasing and staring she gotten, she's soon developed a complex about it and become distant as a result. Her insecurities affected her so badly, she decided to be an introvert, and stop interacting with people entirely- limiting her interactions only with her family and close friends -thus having a poor social disposition. It was noted in the light novel that even her interest in fashion is affected, wearing only rough and simple clothes, and letting her hair grow out longer since she was mistaken for a boy once.

Feeling ostracized, she always wishes that she is a short, cute girl instead, believing that she could be more outgoing and made more friends if that were the case. This is immediately apparent when Karen herself remarked when she passes by a group of short high schoolers: "How lucky. Cute. Short. If only I were their size-".

Her dream to become a cute "chibi" girl serves as her main motivation for trying out virtual reality games when she first learned about them. She has never touched or played video games before, but curiosity nudged her enough to try to make her impossible dream a reality via the virtual world.

With the idea in her head, this showcases another of Karen's personality trait. She can be stubbornly determined and persistent in getting what she wants. When she tried out her first VRMMO game, ALfheim, the game failed to deliver the avatar she wanted. Instead, her game avatar is a tall beauty just like her real-life self. She easily gave up on ALfheim due to that, but she hasn't given up on trying other VRMMO games available in order to make her dream come true. So, she tries, again and again, converting her in-game ID to every possible VRMMO games available out there. It doesn't matter to her what the genre is. She will find a game that allows her to be shorter. Then finally, on her 37th game, her wish to be a cute "chibi" girl finally came true. Her game avatar is less than 150 centimetres tall.

Now, this is where an entirely new personality surfaces when she takes on the identity of LLENN within the 37th game- Gun Gale Online, a grim and brutal "world of guns". This particular personality will be primarily featured in the game.

As LLENN, she becomes noticeably giddier and excitable, acting very child-like, jumping and running around the place. Already we see a stark contrast to her real-life personality. Even overhearing players and NPCs comments on LLENN's small stature, whether if it's an insult or a genuine compliment, would make her grin happily. It made sense why she has such a sudden personality shift. Who wouldn't be overjoyed when your impossible dream finally came true? Since she also desires to be girlish in this form, she decided to change the color of ALL of her gear entirely pink, including her guns. She even affectionately nicknamed her P90 sub-machine gun "P-chan". While Karen does play the game properly, it's clear that she enjoys roleplaying as the cute and adorable LLENN more than anything. She even treats the gritty virtual world she's in as a giant playground for her roleplay.

Speaking of treating the world as a giant playground, she finds the thrill of PvP after ambushing a squadron of players who she fearfully assumed would "kill" her if they spot her. Since then she's been ambushing any players who enter her usual hang-out spot. This little rampage of LLENN's earned her an infamous reputation and the moniker "Pink Devil" within the game's community. However, upon learning that other players are annoyed by the player killing, she feels guilty about it and stop ambushing players entirely and sticks to enjoying monster hunting only. If she was having fun, she wouldn't want it to be at the expense of others (unless they attack first, or she's in a battle royale, then it's different).

Being LLENN doesn't necessarily mean Karen's traits would all disappear. After all, Karen and LLENN are still one and the same person. This is noticeable when she's talking to Pito, a female player she met, for the first time. She would speak formally, sometimes stutter, and appear quite meek to the other. She can be indecisive, too, when asked to do something she's not interested in. When Pito suggests her to participate in the Squad Jam, a PvP tournament team battle royale, in her place, she couldn't give her a straight answer right away. Even if she has free time to participate, she is hesitant about teaming up with strangers and believe that she's not suited for PvP competitive environment, despite her reputation of being a Player Killer. When circumstances left her with little choices, she decided to join the battle royale and paired up with Pito's friend, M, in the end.

Karen/LLENN is also an understanding and forgiving person. Near the end of the tournament, her only teammate, M, betrayed and tried to kill her to take on the leadership lore so that he would intentionally surrender. Naturally, she is upset since they're so close to getting first place and stops him from killing her, but she understands his reason when she read about the note Pito left for him. Said note read that she'll kill him in real-life if he dies in the tournament. Not taking the betrayal to heart, she thanked him for all the help and advice he gave to her as she runs off to fight the final battle against team SHINC on her own. Though she still does think M is overreacting over the apparent "death threat", believing that Pito was just joking as par for the course for her. I mean, what kind of person would actually kill someone in real-life over a video game, right?

During the event of the first Squad Jam, Karen's slowly grown to become more confident in herself after each squad she faced. Although playing GGO was a form of escapism at first, she eventually sees it as a source of self-confidence that she couldn't find in the real world. Her experiences in the battle royale made a huge impact on her to get over her height complex, too. Despite it not being a real "death game", the repeated feeling that she could "die" made her realized and said: "I realized that if I didn't give up on life, I'd survived somehow".

Emboldened by her experiences, she even cut her hair short as physical proof of character development, signifying a new beginning. And subsequently, she's able to make friends with a group of high schoolers (who is actually team SHINC) she usually passes by, something she's unable to do her whole life.

Abilities:

Although Karen has no outstanding abilities to speak of, her game avatar does have some perks that she'll come with to the game.

Super speed: In-universe, she puts a lot of skill points into her AGI stat, which affects her running speed and evasive ability. She's able to blitz through the battlefield and take out an entire squadron herself, given that she's able to ambush them and catch them off-guard. It's said by Pito that it'll take a moving vehicle to even catch up to LLENN's speed.

Avatar form: Her avatar is a munchkin. She's less than 150 centimetres tall. However, thanks to her heavy focus on speed, she doesn't spend her points on other stats-- which makes her extremely fragile in this form and can be easily taken out just by a few hits if she's not careful.

Alignment: Aiada. At the start of the anime, Karen is shown to be envious of people that are of shorter heights, but after the end of the first Squad Jam, she no longer harbors the same jealousy she has for short girls and is now appreciative of her current life, in spite of her tall height.

Other: She'll be coming with a P90 submachine gun, a combat knife, and a couple of magazines.
